Life and Limbo
Below is a picture from our vacation at Hilton Head. The activity was billed as "The Limbo". In this picture, Abby is going under the bar, Daniel just finished going under the bar. This activity was not one of their vacation highlights. They didn't enjoy it very much, because it didn't actually turn out to be "The Limbo".
You see, the guys holding the bar never lowered it (they made sure each kid could easily get under it). No one was ever eliminated. No one won. Basically, the activity was void of meaning. It wasn't actually "The Limbo". It was a boring kid parade, going in circles under a stick until the song was over.
Too many men are living "Life" that way: void of any real meaning. Jesus said, "I have come that you might have life, and have it abundantly." (Jn. 10:10) In a passionate pursuit of God through and with Jesus, "Life" comes alive. It is full of meaning and significance. It is full of adventure, risks and rewards. It is full of consequences and opportunities to store up eternal treasures and bear fruit that will last forever. In short, it is full: it's truly "Life".
Does it feel like you've been in a boring kid parade, going in circles under a stick until the song is over? Receive Christ. Re-orient your life toward God and His ways. Re-kindle your adventurous passion for the glory of Christ and the cause of eternity. Re-commit your full allegiance to Him! Start really living!

Tom --
Thanks for this column, your observations are right on the mark.
It is a tragedy that so many men of my generation -- Baby Boomers -- really do not understand why they are here. Although their lives are still busy & filled with activity, many are basically just killing time as the clock slowly runs out. Even among believing Christians, many of us are really not trying very hard.
A friend at JFBC recently observed that for many of us Boomers, this is an incredible opportunity to do some good work for God's kingdom through missions, volunteering, teaching, etc. In most cases we're still healthy physically and in terms of experience and intellect we are at our peak -- we are supremely qualified to get out there and share the good news of Christ.
Keep up the good work, we're glad to have you at JFBC.
